Part of her “Alphabet” Regencies, The Rambunctious Lady Royston may look a bit like a traditional Regency, but anachronisms and some steamier than standard scenes place this in the class of contemp hist-ro/Reg Rom.
The Lady in question is very likable, high spirited, and loves to take adventures in her brother’s purloined breeches. Her husband, a reformed rake suffering from ennui and thereby delighted by his minx of an “infant” wife, does little more than scold.
Farcical scenes abound, this book was an enjoyable, quick read…not quite romp as much as comedy with more on the nose slapstick than the more subtle tones of a Heyer or Hern. Reminds me of early Julia Quinn, Lisa Kleypas or Eloisa James–that triad of hist-ro authors that favored funny and witty over serious and steamy (at least in their formative years).
True to a romp rather than a drama, the supporting characters were funny and kept the pace. There was also a villian in the guise of an old affair that made a hasty departure somewhere towards the middle, which was a bit of relief as that whole plot device can be tiring. For the most part, since the H/h marry early on, the book is hinged on the whole love me/love me not internal debate.
Generous Reg Rom readers will enjoy the light faire, conservative or rigid readers who like clean and traditional will find more than a few bones to pick here.
(4 out of 6 Enjoyable read, but I could have done without the love scenes which didn’t do much for me either way. Solid characters but not quite sparklers)
