Wynn, Viscount Ingall, saved a young woman from a fire. Lady Victoria Keyes, in despair of her life, promised herself to marry any man who rescued her, whoever he might be. But Wynn was a social outcast and refused her hand. And the diamond key Torrie’s father gave her at her come-out ball was a promise to give her heart and hand only to her true love . . .
The Diamond Lady Torrie has had several Seasons and so far been unimpressed with the marriage material. But realizing her parents frustration and impatience with her unmarried state and facing a near death experience, she vows that the man to rescue her will be the one she marries.
Luckily (for her at least), her knight in shining armour is the wealthy, handsome Viscount Ingall. Yes, he has a checkered past…but his fearless rescue is enough to persuade Torrie to propose on the spot.
What follows is a delicate dance of friendship and courtship that is sweet. There are some funny recurring themes, and the H/h are likeable, if completely pattern card. Torrie is one of the fabulous heroines who has everything going for her–looks, wealth, personality–and so her arc is maybe a bit milky, but then again the scars of the hero come across a little undersold, so perhaps its better Metzger skirts the deep end of the pool. Their shallower characteristics in no way detract from the HEA ending, and perhaps made the book a bit more breezy than had the author tried to cram in a lot of drama.
That Metzger adds a lukewarm would be villain tends to make the pace veer occasionally towards the silly, but generally this was an enjoyable, easy read that didn’t break any molds, tropes, or otherwise tax the imagination.
From the traditional Regency stable, Metzger meets Reg Rom expectations. Its not quite up to snuff when compared with the Diamonds of the genre, but its nonetheless a good solid option for those wanting an easy, breezy clean Regency.
