Lord Griffin disappeared five years ago into the wilds of Brazil, leaving a fiancée in England. Now he has returned to claim her, but she is betrothed to a duke, who not only outranks him but is a far more suitable match for Myra. Though a beauty, Myra hasn’t the spirit and charm of her younger sister, Alice, who has always treasured her memories of Griffin. But he is so intent on winning back his fiancée that he scarcely notices the child who has grown into a delightful woman.
Lord Griffin hits the shores of England and immediately attempts to reclaim his fiancee. Trouble is everyone in England thought he was dead. After wearing the willow for five years, Myra has landed a Duke.
Myra and the Duke are a good match. They are both dummies who love fashion and Society. Lord Savage, world explorer that he is, is much more adventurous.
I am still not clear whether vanity or lust sends him on a steadfast campaign to win Myra back. Even though she is beautiful, she seems like completely the wrong match for him–and he must be a dummy not to see it. Instead, he invests a lot of time trying to win her back and defeat the Duke. The Duke is a chicken heart, and actually kind of sweet and concerned about Myra, whereas Lord Griffin comes off a bit like a preening rooster. Or should I say cuckoo?
The real heroine is the little sister, Alice, who has always crushed hard on Griffin. Why, I am still not sure. I guess he is attractive in that way that bad boys are kinda hot when you are going through puberty and subconsciously you know they are completely unattainable. For his part, Lord Griffin realizes she has been devoted to him over the years and that finally wins him over. Not the most satisfying of romantic climaxes, if you ask me…although I do love a good friends to lovers.
If the romance is unconvincing, and the plot a little annoying, it nonetheless is written by Joan Smith. Funny moments are there, and the pace moves fast enough that is wasn’t a total chore to burn through this one. However, I don’t think its destined for the re-read pile.
3 out of 6 It has its moments of funny, but overall the romance falls a little flat
