Gray’s new book of roads. The tourist and traveller’s guide to the roads…(1824) is a super handy guide of travelling in the UK. Things like distance, route, and local networks are expounded on in gorgeous detail. I wish I had found this earlier, and can’t wait to put it to work. Maps of each of the counties are in the back and there is an awesome index to help you navigate to your destination or departure place of choice.
Here I share the mail coach routes from London as of 1824 as an example of the utility of this book. There are also other, similar pocket road books available for the Regency era, including Leigh’s, depending on the specific years you are trying to target. Never ceases to amaze how handy Google Library is for first source resource…(although I miss the smell of libraries and books, especially old ones).
