The Cock Lane ghost actually occurred in 1762, but is such an interesting anecdote, I wanted to share (and it was still listed in guide books to London during the Regency era, so apparently still of interest to visitors to Town.)
No. 33 Cock-Lane in West Smithfield was a small, three story house near St. Paul’s. The story goes as follows:
THE MIRROR OF LITERATURE, AMUSEMENT, 1839
The story was made popular by media coverage, and would later be alluded to in A Tale of Two Cities, landing the haunting in the annals of histories great paranormal hoaxes.
