Regency Culture and Society: Botanical Emblems

From November 1819 La Belle Assemblee, a short article on botanical emblems outlines some of the symbology behind various plants and sundry.  Although it didn’t become a prevalent practice until the Victorian era, it is interesting to think how coded messages have long been sent through gifts of various plants since the beginning of time.

It also appears like garlic has a long tradition of warding off badies.
