Regency Economy: The Gardener

In The Book of Trades, Or Library of the Useful Arts..(1806) there is a chapter devoted to the career of a gardener.

In the Regency era, some gardeners were revered as rock stars.  In the 18th century Lancelot “Capability” Brown’s informal style became coveted by the upper classes. In the early 19th century, Humprhy Repton continued on in Capability’s footsteps.

The Royal Horticultural Society in England was established in 1804, and continued the academic interest in landscape and gardening.  Here is a handy timeline of gardening in the 19th century (http://www.gardendigest.com/timel19.htm#Start)
