Regency Hot Spots: Tavistock Street

The Original (1850)

Tavistock Chapel, a modern interpretation of Gothic architecture, was situated in Tavistock Street, a popular site for milliners, haberdashers, and ornamental goods.

The name comes from a title from the Russell family, the Duke of Bedford.  Feeding into Southampton Street, Tavistock was close to Covent Garden and its stalls.

Although not much more than the description above survives to tell us details about Tavistock Street, the vision of carriages queued up for fashionable shopping was surely a sight to behold.
