I am embracing cozy sweaters, Autumn mood, and all things spooktacular the last week…so thought along with your Pumpkin Spice flavored everything (except Please, oh no no, not Kraft Mac and Cheese!) you might also be ready for a shortlist of new Autumn/Halloween reads.
Not going to lie, this is one of my favorite lists to compile because its my favorite Season…but since I don’t read a ton of paranormal I am not always up to date on the latest Regency scares. Which means I haven’t compiled a top list for Autumn in a few years; we have this one from 2015 and this one from 2016 which are still great lists.
This year, as I mentioned, I was in the mood for the Autumn hook up so I grabbed some copies of recommended reading and have compiled a new top six list for you:
Julia Klassen: The Silent Governess Inspirational that goes long and deep on the gothic elements, this is perfect for the kisses only reader wanting a Lord Byron-esque hero with some darker elements.
Tracy MacNish: Stealing Midnight I read this after Sarah MacLean called this book “straight up bananas” and she wasn’t lying. Its got all those gothic elements you want, plus some you didn’t know you did.
Jane Austen: Persuasion With another reader recommending as “beautifully autumnal”, you know the second chance romance won’t disappoint on delivering the full Regency experience.
Georgette Heyer: Venetia This review was from the early years of the blog, so short on details, but it was recommended on Twitter by several other Heyerites who love its Autumn mood. With a naughty rakehell neighbor, and a managing female heroine, it also has the classic foundation for a great Reg Rom….and is a great Autumn re-read.
Georgette Heyer: The Reluctant Widow In a mash up of gothic spy/Regency romp, we have a marriage of convenience that ends in death almost immediately. This has all the humor and intrigue I love in a Heyer, and perfect for a cozy weekend read.
Erica Ridley: Too Wicked to Kiss Looking for a good gothic, I was so tickled to find Ridley has written a whole series of them. I started with book one (a rare occurrence, I know!) and absolutely loved this gothic/murder mystery.
Honorable Mentions:
Rebecca King: Eloisa’s Adventure
Ashley J Barner and Jennifer Sanders: Mr. Pembroke’s Ward
