Your Question If a Regency man (say, Charles Bingley) wanted to say something is smashing, terrific, etc., what would he say? “Smashing” seems to come about in the 1830’s.
Thank you!
Thank you for your question, Valerie, and for being a Regency Reader!
Charles Bingley, heaping praise on something, might have used the following expressions:
Prime (well done, excellent)
Bang Up or Slap Up (first rate, c. 1810)
Dashing (in fine style, prime, c. early 18th century)
Hope that helps!
