291 If you mean to be happy when you are old be temperate when you are young 292 If your son knows that you can give him a large fortune you may be sure that he will take no pains to get one for himself 293 A snail is the only animal that never goes from home 294 A good economist does not make an ostentatious display of what she does Every thing about her is elegantly neat without showing a laboured attention to dress or furniture Every thing stands in its proper place She is easy and affable with her servants and allows of no scold ing in the kitchen or servants hall The family business goes on as régularly as a good house clock that keeps time without being always set either faster or slower Every one looks contented and happy and the house work is done with regula rity She keeps a good and plentiful MANNERS 53 table but not covered with expensive delicacies Her provision is always in season and sent up well dressed When company is asked a few well chosen luxuries are introduced This is the cri terion of a small but well regulated family 295 Placemen and pensioners are beggars in disguise 296 When we are hot we suppose that no man is cold and when we are cold we suppose no man is hot 297 A medical man who makes expe riments upon his patients will soon find them disposed to make an experiment upon him by leaving him off 298 He is an unfaithful shepherd who suffers his dog to have the least acquaint ance with the fox 299 Scandal is the amusement of little minds
