Regency Words: Some Common Expressions

A Regency Reader requested more common expressions or idioms.  While we feature some in Regency Cant, we will building out an additional tab to feature more expressions of interest as part of our upcoming update and showcase some of them on the website.

Here are a couple of our favorite:

“He will not find out a way to set the Thames on fire.”  Generally understood to mean the person will not make any wonderful discoveries, as they are not a magician or conjurer.

“Not a feather to fly with.”  They are broke or ruined.

“Their mouth is full of pap.”  They are still a baby, fed on pap.
