A Victorian skeptic discovers real hauntings—and a powerful love—in the New York Times–bestselling author's paranormal romance series debut.
England, 1876. Olivia Moreland prides herself on discrediting charlatans, particularly the false mediums that flock to London. But when Lord Stephen St. Leger requests her help in investigating an alleged psychic's claims, she can't deny the ominous feeling she has within the walls of his ancient estate—or the intimately familiar connection she has with Stephen himself.

The last time he lived at Blackhope Hall, Stephen watched his elder brother claim the family title—and the woman he loved. Now, in the wake of his brother's murder, Stephen has reluctantly returned to find his family ensconced in scandal. Who is responsible for his brother's untimely death? And what is it about investigator Olivia Moreland that so thoroughly draws him in, reigniting a passion he hasn't felt in years?

This book may be unsuitable for people under 17 years of age due to its use of sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and/or violence.

I went to the Victorian era for a journey into the world of spiritualists and seances, and the daughter of Duke set on proving them wrong.

This was fun, and although spooky season is in the rear view mirror, there were Autumnal vibes and a creepy house party that felt still very welcome with the dreary weather.

There are paranormal elements, although I wouldn’t exactly call it a paranormal romance, and also mystery elements, that kept the pace clicking from start to finish.  The MCs had great chemistry, starting out as reluctant partners to unveil the charlatan conning his Lady St. Ledger out her jewels, and then learning there was some fated mates magic happening to bring them together.

This is the first in a series about the eccentric, “mad” Morelands and I think shows potential to be a fun series for readers loving the Victorian vibes.

The middle may be a little sticky, but I liked the investigations and the flashbacks, although a little over used, teased another historic timeline that was fascinating to explore in this way.

There was some violence, mature themes, and intimacy on the page and I also think a fair amount of suspension of disbelief is needed for the readers. I would recommend this for readers who like me are always on the hunt for something “slightly paranormal” with a mystery element and storytelling that I found to be enough of a deviation to keep me entertained.

Some of the secondary characters were delightful and appealing enough to recommend trying other parts of the series.
