I ventured again into the early Victorian era to devour another Coldbreath, this one a sort of prequel for Alice Coldbreath: A Foolish Flirtation. This is Book 1 in a series on Victorian Prizefighters, and rang a lot of bells for me: marriage of convenience, makeover (of inn), and some amazing writing. I literally was crying through a scene fairly early on the book, that is just how exquisite Coldbreath’s writing is.
I like we have two middle class (related to a noble lord) MCs who are at their core good people and get to learn about the life of a publican/innkeeper. The details are fascinating, and the supporting characters really help round out the story. The romance bit is also really excellent, with two MCs forced together after an ambush of sorts. But you get the sense that they are really perfect for each other because they are better together — although its a long road to get there. Most of the action takes place at the inn, which serves the story well. There are is some drama throughout the book, including in the wrap up so readers should expect a more emotional experience.
There is some villianry and a little bit of mystery which keeps up the pace, but I just adored the makeover the plucky heroine administers over the inn. It showcases her strength of character, and how emotionally intelligent she really is. I also love that you get to see a bit more of her brother (from A Foolish Flirtation) and better understand what he was like before he had his turnaround.
There is some violence, mature language and themes, and on page intimacy (a little on the spicier side) so this is better for readers who like mature content.
If you haven’t read Coldbreath yet, I would start here and follow up with A Foolish Flirtation. She is very talented and offers something unique that is also well executed – a joy to read.
