Appeared in the September 1820 issue of Ackermann’s Repository. It looks a bit like a mausoleum to me, but I have to confess that having a garden bathroom does give big spa vibes. And I love this description, citing hair powder as a reason baths were not popular in the Georgian era. Wouldn’t be the first or last time fashion influences health and hygiene.
More’s the pity this print wasn’t copied in color, but I like to picture a lush greenery surrounding a butter stone building, a cheerful blue door, and filled inside with beautiful hand made tiles, a big soaker tub, and lots of plants.
I like that. Butter stone.
