Regency Hot Spots: United Service Club

united service club

Officers in the British Army and Royal Navy above the rank of Major or Commander were eligible to be a member of the United Service Club. Founded in 1815, the club was open until 1978.

It was first located in Abermarle Street in 1816, then moved to Charles Street until settling in 1828 at 116 Pall Mall, in a specially built clubhouse designed by John Nash. This and the Athenaeum stand in the former site of Carlton House (https://www.british-history.ac.uk/survey-london/vols29-30/pt1/pp386-399).  Plates above and below show the Pall Mall location.
