4 SPORTING ADVERTISEMENT IT having been represented to some of the gentlemen of the Turf Club that the short period between the notification of the last races and the commencement of the first meeting did not afford sufficient opportunity for several gentlemen of the society who were so inclined to provide horses to run for the different stakes in order to remedy the inconvenience complained of and to give every member of the community a fair chance of providing a horse or horses to run at the next season's The gentlemen of the Turf Club beg leave to publish the following arrangements determined on at their last meeting of the pre races sent season The stakes to be run for and the time of running to be at two meetings FIRST MEETING First Monday in December 1799 A Purse of 400 rupees or 501 for two three and four years old colts or fillies never having won a regular plate or purse weight for age the best of three mile and half heats Wednesday following A Purse of 800 rupees or 100ฮ™ for horses of all ages weight for age the best of three two mile heats The winner of a purse or gentlemens subscription sweep stakes if a colt to carry 3lb extra if A Ladies Subscription Purse or run for by horses of all descriptions if a five six year old or aged horse lb extra Friday following A Purse of 800 rupees or 1001 for aged horses only weight for inches the best of three two mile heats the winner of the purse on Wednesday not to enter the win ner of any purse or sweepstakes to carry 7lb extra Same day the Galloway sweep stakes open for ten subscribers 100 rupees each not to exceed 14 hands weight for inches one two mile heat PP A ball in the evening concludes the First Meeting SECOND MEETING The Second Monday in January 1800 collection box for horses of all de scriptions never having won a regu lar plate purse or gentlemens subscription sweepstakes catch weight the best of three mile and half heats Wednesday following The Gentlemens Subscription Sweepstakes value 1800 rupees if full open for twelve subscribers 150 rupees each for horses of all descriptions weight for age the best of three two mile heats PP Friday following A Purse of 300 rupees with a stake of three gold mohurs each for the beaten horses of the season not having been distanced weight for age the best of three mile and half heats Same day a Sweepstakes of five gold mohurs each with 300 rupees from the subscription fund to be weight for age one three mile heat horses never having won al lowed 3lb A ball in the evening finishes the season 1799 1800 NB Ten per cent to be de ducted from each plate purse or sweepstakes to go to the general fund for keeping the course in or der & c the weights will be regu lated at the first meeting of the club in September Bombay 1st April 1799 Sporting Magazine.ย (1800).ย United Kingdom:ย Rogerson & Tuxford.

The Bombay Turf Club was formed in 1802, but a predecessor was the Royal Western India Turf Club which held its first meeting in January 1798.ย  This advertisement in the Sporting Magazine evidently was intent on raising awareness of Turf Club meetings in Bombay and providing everyone the opportunity prepare for the next season’s races.
