Carola Dunn: A Poor Relation

Rowena Caxton, formerly mistress of an estate, is reduced to being a “poor relation” in her beautiful cousin Millicent’s home. When the new Lord Farleigh, former major from the Peninsula wars, arrives in the neighborhood, Millicent immediately attempts to attach him. But it is Rowena who teaches the earl about orchards—and about his own heart.

Rowena has been in charge at the family estate since she was young.  At her father’s death, his paperwork is discovered in shambles and a large mortgage on the estate called due.  Reduced to penury, she contacts her Aunt and Uncle to seek shelter.

Her oldest cousin, Millicent, is beautiful and spoiled, a great foil for the more levelheaded, smart Rowena.  Millicent is holding out for a title, and lucky for her the new Lord Farleigh has come home to his estate.

Lord Farleigh is a kind hearted soldier who never had any aspirations to succeed to the title and is ill prepared to manage the orchards and farms that have been grossly underfunded.  Lucky for him his neighbor and new friend, Rowena, is willing to offer him a hand.

What follows is a simple kisses only Regency in a provincial setting with not a ton of conflict, but an accident and recovery, some misunderstandings, and a secondary romance that is quite sweet.

Its solidly written, short and familiar which make it an easy, comfortable read.  Nothing mind blowing or shocking, just a cozy novel for a housebound day or evening.  There is a twist at the end, but its really not much of a surprise.

Not one of my favorite Dunn’s by any stretch and probably would not read, but it was reliably consistent and met expectations enough that if you are searching for a quick and clean Regency, it would be worth a try.
