Julia Quinn: Because of Miss Bridgerton

Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected of places…

This is not one of those times.

Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband… someday.

Sometimes you fall in love with exactly the person you think you should…

Or not.

There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he’s arrogant, annoying, and she’s absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can’t stand the sight of him, either.

But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor…

Because when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, a whole new sort of sparks begins to fly. And when these lifelong adversaries finally kiss, they just might discover that the one person they can’t abide is the one person they can’t live without…

This is a Georgian era book, so if you are strictly a Reg Rom reader, feel free to click away.

Close neighbors with rambling estates and big, noisy broods, George and Billie have been conspicuously antagonistic for years.  She is a familiar Quinn heroine, who loves wearing breeches, climbing trees, and in general doing everything men do…but better.  He is a stuffy first son, who destined to stay at home and do his duty has become a little resentful and high in the instep.

Its obvious these two are fated to be matched, and so we have a bit of enemies or big brother/neighbor trope at play.  There is snark in their conversation until slowly they come to an uneasy truce forced by continued close proximity, including a small house party.  Their respective character arcs are not mind blowing, but the romance is sweet and believable and ultimately what redeems this book from being lackluster.  And its not as if they are mortal enemies, they just neighbors who had enough of an age difference that their friendship never flourished as kids.

There are lots of characters (house parties will do that) and interesting lawn games, but just when the comedy was about to reach its peak something would bust it up.  Its like those rom coms where everytime the MCs are going to kiss they get interrupted.  Like 5 times in one movie.  This happens more with the comedic moments, which bummed me out because Quinn can be really, really fun and funny.  But there are moments that sparkle and characters that peak through scenes (you know, as a set up to their books) which are entertaining and interesting.

Ultimately, this was forgettable but sweet and good for a beach day or two.  The sex scene was fairly vanilla and there is very little in the way of violence or mature content.  If you are looking for erotic, sizzling sex…skip this one.  But if you like a little sweet sex to add to the romance, this will be in your sweet spot.

Billie is pretty much a tomboy, so if you are looking for glamourous Georgian style and wit, you won’t find it here.  But if you love Quinn’s way with a Minx, you will probably enjoy this one.

I won’t re-read, but after a series of Quinn books I didn’t love, its good to see her books headed back in the right direction.  And I do think some readers will adore this relationship and the humor.

5 Stars 3.75 out of 6 Georgian neighbors to love with sweet romance
