Regency Folklore: A Visit from Beyond

One more spine-tingling tale in celebration of All Hallows Eve.

Appearance to a Gentleman at St Domingo A GENTLEMAN now living of the name of Wilson who refides at Liverpool in Lancashire walking with some friends near a place called St Domingo a little distance from the town thought he saw a relation whom the expected every day to arrive from Jamaica in a field near where he then was He directly went into the field and came so near him that he hailed him but to his great surprize he seemed to link into the earth When he Teturned to his company he appeared fo greatly agitated that they asked him what was the matter with him He then told them he had seen Will James whom they all knew and he said he was sure they would hear of his death and related to them what he grounded his belief upon They jeered him upon his superstition However the next day the vessel came into the port of Liverpool and brought the fad news that this man who was chief mate of a Guineaman had at the time Mr Wilson faw the apparition tumbled down the hold of the ship fractured his skull and expired within ten minutes This is krtown to hundreds now living at Liverpool New Lights from the World of Darkness Or the Midnight Messenger; with Solemn Signals from the World of Spirits. Containing Wonderful Evidences of the Visits of Ghosts, Apparitions, &c. … and Notices of Death … The Whole Forming a Constellation of Horror!!! (1800)
