CW: Suicide

A carriage accident drives the nervous Aunt and her ward to the home of reclusive Earl of Hawkhurst.  Snowed in, and finally regaining consciousness, the intrepid Miss Christine Denham finds herself bewitched by the mysterious Earl.

Many readers compare this to Beauty and the Beast or Phantom of the Opera.  It reminded me, too, of Jane Eyre, with leanings towards the gothic melodrama.  If this is your cup of tea, you may really love this book as other readers do.

I do like the gothic, especially when paired with a liberal amount of humour which typically Michaels imbues in her books.  However, I found this one to be scant on the laughs.

I don’t really love insta-love, preferring the slow burn, and this was too much of an immediate “in love” for me.  I also realize that I like a fair amount of supporting characters, and because of the snowed in plot for three quarters of the book, the characters are isolated.

It was nonetheless entertaining and easy to read in a couple of sittings, with a nice HEA.

There are only on page kisses, and some mature themes and a little violence, but generally appropriate for most readers.

I am interested in tracking down the follow up to this book, A Difficult Disguise, as I was charmed by the MC who plays a significant role in the wrap up of Moonlight Masquerade.

And yes, there is a fair amount of moonlight meetings and a masquerade, so A+ for title matching the story.
