Regency Fashion: Carriage, Morning Visiting, Evening, and Dinner Party Dresses (1827)



Records of the Beau Monde FASHIONS FOR NOVEMBER 1827 EXPLANATION OF THE PRINTS OF THE FASHIONS CARRIAGE DRESS A ROUND dress of gros de Naples of Scotch tartan the ground canary yellow A broad bias fold round the border gives a beautiful change of the chequers into dia monds and the same appearance is pre served in the sleeves ร  la Marie which are cut in bias and confined at the wrist with three elegantly wrought gold bracelets in rich chasings each fastened by a cameo head The corsage is made to fit the shape and a white satin mantilla is worn with the dress trimmed round with a double row of broad blond set on full The mantilla has long ends which are drawn through a sash of broad ribbon tied in front with a small rosette with very short ends the rosette is of two colours one the most prevailing colour in the tartan the other puff is the same as the ground of the silk and the satin mantilla has a similar rosette at the throat which is ornamented with a narrow triple ruff of lace A hat of gros de Naples of moderate and becoming dimensions the same colour as the sash is placed rather on one side it is bound with white satin and is ornamented with satin and gauze ribbon the satin ribbon the colour of the hat and the gauze white brocaded in a pattern of vine leaves The strings of the hat in a long loop and under the brim on the ele vated side of the hat a small bow of white gauze ribbon of which the strings are com posed The hat is fastened with a men tonniรจre of blond quilled on white satin Shoes of lemon coloured kid and Wood stock gloves of ribbon of lively colours suitable to though differing from that of the dress the mantelet has a falling collar of the same ma terial as itself and over that is one of fine India muslin trimmed with a full quilling of tulle The sleeves are ร  la Marie and are each confined at the wrist by two enamelled bracelets fastened with an antique head The hat is of very fine Leghorn trimmed with gauze ribbons richly and beautifully brocaded in flowers Sometimes this ribbon is all white but more frequently the flowers are of some delicate colour on a white ground the foliage and flowers always of the same hue Very fine and light white plumage is added to this hat and plays over the crown and brim in the most graceful manner A small bow of ribbon is placed under the brim at its extremity and a bandeau of the same twisted crosses the hair in front The ear rings are formed of one very large cornelian EVENING DRESS A DRESS of white taffety with two flounces cut in indented scallops and edged with branches of green foliage in embroidery Over the upper flounce is a double row of the same foliage worked on the dress and the upper flounce is headed by a silk cordon slightly en gerbe a pointed pelerine colle of white and green The body is made rette of crรชpe lisse covers the bust trimmed round with a rรบche of tulle and surmounted near the throat with a full narrow ruff of the same The sleeves are of crรชpe lisse long and full and have a narrow mancheron of embroidered taffety the same as on the edge of the flounces and consisting of one A DRESS of levantine the colour poussiรจre simple row of indented scallops On the des ruines trimmed at the border with two wrists are two odd bracelets on the left deep flounces cut in Vandyke points trim arm next the wrist is one very broad of med round with a narrow rรปche pinked white and gold enamel fastened by a cameo the upper flounce headed by a full rรบche over that a bracelet formed of two gold A mantelet pelerine of a novel kind the chains clasped with a white agate On the same as the dress has one broad long end right arm are two bracelets close together with three points confined by a sash or belt of gold lace on which are sewn bright gar MORNING VISITING DRESS nets and these are clasped with white agate A dress hat is rather profusely ornamented with a variety of field flowers some of which are under the brim on the hair the hat is of white crape and has long strings floating loose of brocaded white gauze ribbon A belt of shaded green ribbon encircles the waist and fastens behind with a gold buckle The shoes are of black satin DINNER PARTY DRESS A DRESS of celestial blue gros de Naples with two flounces slightly festooned scal loped and embroidered at the edges with dark blue Dividing each flounce and over the upper one is a rick silk twisted cordon of light and dark blue the whole surmount ed by elegant bouquets of foliage in dark blue The corsage ร  la Sรฉvignรฉ with full long sleeves fastened on the left arm next the wrist by a broad bracelet of gold with an antique intaglio head above that a single gold chain On the right arm are three bracelets that next the wrist of white and gold enamel with a cameo head The other two consist each of two rows of gold beads fastened with a brooch of pearls Over the bust is thro an amulet chain Egyptian pebbles and large gold beads The dress hat is of white transparent stif fened net trimmed with pink striped ribbon gauze blond and Indian flowers A bow of pink ribbon is placed over each temple under the brim and the strings float loose
