Regency Culture and Society: Men and Manners (29)

362 It is shocking to hear a son de scribing the foibles of a parent 363 When you wash your mouth do not spout the water into the finger glass It is an indelicate practice especially as it is done after dinner 364 Choose a wife as you choose a knife Look to her temper 365 We seldom know the value of friends till death has made a separation 366 Affectation is a contemptible weakness 367 Young men are seldom gifted with much foresight otherwise college debts would be less frequent 368 When words are well chosen brevity is clearness D5
369 There is something bewitching in hair powder It always makes a man look so like a gentleman 370 Such is the harmony of the world that the wants of one country are supplied by the superfluities of another 371 Strictly speaking no man is inde pendent The shoemaker if he pleases may compel the nobleman to walk in his stockings 372 If your servant be impertinent it may for the first time proceed from ig norance but if continued you must not pass it over unless you mean him to be come your master 373 If you mean your son for Oxford or Cambridge take care to impress upon his mind that there are idle blockheads in all colleges by whom if he suffer himself to be seduced he will bid fair to take his place among blockheads for the rest of his days
