such person is well known to them and is of good character and the boat intended to be used under such license must if a boat used with sails be of the length of 18 feet or upwards and if a row boat of the length of 14 feet or upwards and shall in ali respects be approved of by the Commissioners And the number of each boat shall be painted in figures not less than 3 inches in depth in yellow on a dark ground and the name of the owner thereof shall also be painted on some conspicuous part of the interior of the boat and no boat shall be permitted to go to sea without two watermen or sailors on board competent to manage the same And the owner of every boat or the watermen or sailors employed therein shall whilst employed or plying for hire have a medal with the number of the boat for which they ply and the words Brighton Pleasure Boat thereon attached to their clothes on the left breast or arm and no owner sailor or waterman shall ply for hire or go to sea without having such medal so affixed FARES FOR BOATS Used with Sails the time to be computed from the time of Sailing till landing s d For a whole boat for any time not exceeding one hour For a whole boat for any time not exceeding half an hour after the first hour 0 3 0 For a whole boat for every hour after the first hour 0 5 0 And when the whole boat shall not be taken then for each passenger for any time not exceeding one hour 0 1 0 For any time not exceeding half an hour after the first hour 0 6 And for every hour after the first hour 0 1 0 0

Regent's Canal This Canal branching out of the Grand Junction at Paddington by Maida Hill through the Regent's Park and passing under Islington and the New River by a Tunnel takes its course towards the Thames by Kingsland Hackney and Limehouse It unites all the principal canals in the kingdom with the river Thames From its commencement to the termination at Limehouse it extends nearly nine miles and within that space are comprised twelve locks and thirty seven bridges The construction of the former is on so excellent a principle that only three minutes and a half are occupied in passing each The work was projected by J Nash esq the royal architect under whose superintendance it has been completed The tunnel under Islington hill is about three quarters of a mile in length and passes under the bed of the New River The expense has been upwards of half a million sterling There are pleasure boats daily in the summer season from the basin in the Regent's Park to Greenford and Harrow attended by a band of music all kinds of refreshment may be had on board the charge one shilling and sixpence Pleasure boats may also be hired by the hour or day for private and select parties at a very trifling charge The picture of London, enlarged and improved, being a correct guide for the stranger, and useful compendium for the inhabitant (1825).
